Mr R from the South East has been awarded a five figure pay-out after a 4 year period of dental hospital neglect. With the end result being the loss of 7 teeth, Mr R has gone through a long and painful ordeal as a result of misdiagnosis.
In 2008, Mr R was referred to the hospital by his dentist after complaining about excruciating pain in his one of his bottom teeth. After what seemed like a thorough examination, Mr R was told that in order to relieve the pain his tooth would need to be extracted. After agreeing to the procedure, he thought that would mean the end to the uncomfortable pain he was experiencing, but unfortunately this was not the case.
Mr R said, “The extraction I was advised to go through with did not help with the pain at all, in fact it added to the agony of the whole experience as I was still suffering from unbearable shooting pains in most of my teeth”. Between 2008 and 2012, following several complaints of pain and countless visits back to the hospital, Mr R went through multiple extractions on numerous occasions and was regularly being told by the hospital that it would ease his pain.
Mr R’s patience was wearing thin – he ended up getting a second opinion from another hospital where he was told he was in fact in good periodontal health, and that the extractions would have made no difference to the pain he was suffering with. This shocking discovery revealed that Mr R suffered from a condition called atypical odontalgia, which can also be known as a phantom tooth pain that has no identifiable cause. The hospital repeatedly failed to diagnose his symptoms, meaning he lost 7 teeth which could have been avoided. Despite having numerous extractions, Mr R was then given uncomfortable dentures which he also had difficulty with, resulting in further pain and distress.
Mr R took up his case with the Dental Law Partnership, who were able to assess the extent of the wrongdoing, as well as the permanent damage which had been caused by the hospital’s misdiagnosis. We were able to secure the client £20,000 in compensation which will be used to fund restorative treatment, as well as hopefully helping Mr R recover from this traumatic experience.
