South East woman receives £21,500 compensation after her dentist failed to treat her periodontal disease
Christine Salter, Solicitor at the Dental Law Partnership, helped one of our clients, Ms M, obtain £21,500 after her dentist failed to promptly treat her periodontal condition.
Ms M was a regular attendee with Dr T, having attended many appointments over a 17 year period. She trusted him and thought she was receiving the best level of care when it came to her oral health.
Over that time she went to plenty of appointments and had a number of difference treatments, with her declining periodontal condition never being mentioned.
During one appointment Ms M let Dr T know that she had been struggling with pain and swelling in her mouth for 4 days. It was at this appointment that Dr T prescribed Ms M with antibiotics and referred her to a Periodontist.
At her visit with the new dentist the extent of her periodontal condition was brought to light. The new dentist found that Ms M had bone loss and was advised that teeth would need to be extracted.
Ms M commented, “Dr T had plenty of opportunity to inform me of the periodontal disease. Instead it was left untreated and by the time I was referred to the Periodontist my oral health had declined massively.”
If Ms M’s periodontal condition had been properly monitored and treated then the condition would have been brought under control. Due to Dr T’s mismanagement Ms M has suffered tooth loss and will lose more teeth in the future. She has experienced discomfort and the inconvenience of root canal treatment.
