Back to School, Not Back to the Dentist! How to Avoid Tooth Decay this School Year?

Back to school again! With the school holidays coming to end – as parents, I can already hear the excitement oozing from the screen. I’m sure you’re all looking forward to some normality and routine back into your lives. So, with all the new starts, new teacher, new school year, new classroom – why not start some healthy new oral habits too. Did you know one of the main reason children miss school is due to tooth pain?

Glasgow University found children with tooth decay had significantly more time off school than children with healthy teeth. The study found a third of the children involved were experiencing oral health problems and on average missed five more half-days of school per year.

Apart from the obvious problem of dealing with painful tooth decay and worsening dental problems in children, they are missing out on valuable time in the classroom to go to the dentist.

How can we help our children avoid tooth decay and maintain better oral health?

As parents, preventive measures are always the best way forward, to make sure your children don’t miss school unnecessarily. If tooth decay is left untreated, it can lead to more serious conditions, that’s why maintaining heathy dental hygiene and habits is so important, that includes:

  • Keeping up with Routine Dental Visits
  • Healthy brushing habits = making brushing fun
  • Maintaining a healthy diet
