New Year, New You: Dental Resolutions You Can Stick To

Out with the Old! January is a time for us to reflect on past habits and work on starting anew. The New Year is the perfect time to try and start new habits, and improving your dental care will bring with it a whole host of benefits for your overall health.

A floss a day keeps the plaque away

We asked our experts; Do I need to floss? “Regular flossing removes plaque that forms along the gum line. It’s best to floss before brushing your teeth. You can use interdental brushes instead of flossing, especially if you have gaps between your teeth. Your dentist or hygienist can advise you on the best way to clean your teeth.” Read more of the most searched Dental Health questions here.

Are you drinking enough water?

Did you know? People who drink 3 or more sugary drinks daily have 62% more tooth decay, fillings and tooth loss. Why not swap this out for water instead? 3 benefits of water for your teeth:

  1. It helps strengthen your teeth
  2. Plaque can’t build up in a clean, hydrated mouth
  3. Prevents a dry mouth

Stop excessive drinking, vaping and smoking

Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol can have detrimental impacts on lots of areas of your heath, but did you know high alcohol consumption is widely associated with tooth decay. By cutting down or giving up alcohol, you can protect your enamel and keep your teeth stronger and healthier.

Is vaping bad for your teeth? “In short, the answer is yes. Vaping [e-cigarette] has become increasingly popular over recent years because it is considered a safer alternative to smoking tobacco. However, many studies have shown that vaping can have harmful effects on your teeth and gums. We know that vaping causes excess bacteria in the mouth and some vaping liquids can also cause mouth dryness. These changes in the mouth are associated with gum disease, tooth decay and bad breath. Although e-cigarettes are less toxic than traditional cigarettes, many still contain nicotine that could increase the risk of oral cancer. The nicotine in vapes can also cause tooth staining and yellow discoloration.”

Attend Your Dental Appointments

Neglecting good oral hygiene practices and missing dental appointments can lead to a range of dental problems. Attending dental appointments helps keep your teeth and gums as healthy as possible. If problems are left untreated it could make them harder to treat in the future, early prevention and detection is always the best way forward.

We asked our experts; If I don’t attend the dentist regularly and I’m a victim of dental negligence, will this affect my claim?  “Attending regular dental appointment is vital, not just for helping your dentist diagnose issues and treat you, but if for any reason you experience dental negligence at the hands of your dentist your likelihood for a claim is far higher if you have a full dental attendance record than if not.”
