Trick or Teeth: How to keep your children’s teeth healthy this Halloween!

Halloween is already scary enough, without the overwhelming fear of child tooth decay.

Did you know? Tooth decay is the most common reason for hospital admissions among five to nine-year-olds in England and fewer than 4 out of 10 have good oral health. This is according to a joint report from the “Child of the North project” and the “Centre for Young Live”. You can read the full report here.

We know the desire to indulge in sweets and chocolate over the coming months is going to be high (adults and children alike) particularly on Halloween, but it’s so important to consume in moderation and practice good oral care, to give you and your child the best chance of maintaining a healthy smile. I have teamed up with our dental experts at Dental Law (think of us as the Velma to your Daphne) always on hand with plenty of tricks and tips up our sleeves for keeping your children’s teeth healthy this Halloween season.

  1. Limitations: We’ve all got a sweet tooth, so cutting sweets out completely is not on the cards, especially for children. But your child can still enjoy their favourite Halloween treats if you can limit how many they eat, and the number of times they eat them throughout the day. Try and avoid them constantly snacking on sugary items throughout the day, or having them last thing at night, as this prolongs their exposure to sugary and acidic foods which will lead to them developing cavities..
  2. Water: Water has so many benefits to your overall health and well-being, one of which being its fabulous for your oral health. Remember to drink water after consuming sweets as it can help rinse away sugar that would otherwise sit on your teeth while also helping to neutralise the acids in your mouth.
  3. Brushing: Make sure you brush your teeth after eating any chocolate or sweets, as this can help remove the bacteria from their mouth straight away. We also recommend flossing every day, it’s best to floss before brushing your teeth. You can read more oral hygiene tips in our “We ask the most searched Dental Health Questions”.
  4. Regular Dental Check-ups: Don’t forget to schedule regular check-ups and oral hygiene appointments. To help you maintain a healthy smile.

By following these tips, you can enjoy the Halloween season without your child compromising their oral health.
